Boccaccio | Suppé

The comic operetta “Boccaccio” is considered to be the most successful stage work by Franz von Suppè. The libretto is written by Friedrich Zell and Richard Genée. The story is about Giovanni Boccaccio, the famous poet of the Decameron, who himself becomes the hero of a love story. It was premiered on February 1, 1879 at the Carltheater in Vienna. Suppès Musik brilliantly implements the comedic arrogance of the text. It’s brilliantly orchestrated and very catchy. The distinction between comic opera and operetta is lost in many passages of the work.
